When should I use Grand Rounds?

Use Grand Rounds when:

  • You need an expert. We get you a second opinion or personalized care plan from a world-leading expert.
  • You need support. We help you make tough decisions or help you decide if surgery is right for you.
  • You need answers. We tell you everything you need to know about a new diagnosis or existing condition.
  • You need a checkup. We find the best physician in your area.
  • You need a hand. We book doctor’s appointments, gather medical records, and handle all the details.
  • You need a voice. We protect you and explain confusing terms when you’re in the hospital.
  • You need an ear. We quickly connect you with a staff physician to help you think decisions all the way through.

In addition to the above circumstances, completing a Grand Rounds service is required before certain procedures in order to avoid $200 in out-of-pocket surgery fees, referred to as the Single Opinion Penalty. How do I get started?

Since it takes several weeks to review each procedure for an expert opinion, please make sure to begin the process at least 2-3 weeks prior to surgery. It only takes 5 minutes to get started. Once you have started, you will have a personal care team helping you every step of the way. You can call or message your care team at any time with any question you may have. The complete process of working with Grand Rounds for an expert opinion takes about 2-3 weeks.

What is the Vail Resorts Single Opinion Penalty?

We have found that certain surgeries and procedures have a higher rate of misdiagnosis and improper treatment. Because of this, those enrolled in a Vail Resorts medical plan should use Grand Rounds to get a Physician Referral or to complete an Expert Opinion prior to certain surgical procedures so that one of the country’s experts can confirm they are on the best treatment path.

Procedures subject to the penalty include: Joint surgery (shoulder, elbow, hip, knee, ankle & wrist), Back & spinal surgery, OB-GYN surgery, and Bariatric surgery.

You should allow at least 2-3 weeks to receive the expert second opinion through Grand Rounds prior to undergoing the procedure. For detailed information on which procedure codes apply to the Single Opinion Penalty, visit vailresortshealth.com/grand-rounds.

Can Grand Rounds still help me if I don’t need these procedures?

Yes. In fact most people who use Grand Rounds are not considering any of these procedures.

Am I required to follow the advice of Grand Rounds?

You have no obligation to follow the recommendations provided by Grand Rounds. To avoid the penalty, you must receive the Physician Referral or Expert Opinion prior to having the surgery or procedure. You are not required to use the provider identified or follow the expert recommendation provided by Grand Rounds. Your care decisions are between you and your provider, and ultimately the decision is yours.

What if it’s an emergency?

If you have an emergency procedure, working with Grand Rounds will not affect your medical plan fees.

Who can use Grand Rounds?

Grand Rounds is available to Vail Resorts employees and their dependents enrolled in either the Basic or Enhanced medical plans. Vail Resorts provides this service so that you have access to high-quality medical care and are able to achieve better health outcomes.

How much will Grand Rounds cost?

Grand Rounds is fully covered by Vail Resorts and is available at no cost to you and your covered dependents as long you are enrolled in a Vail Resorts medical plan. Simply enter your information and Grand Rounds will waive all fees. If you receive medical services in person, normal plan cost share guidelines apply regarding your deductible, coinsurance, etc.

What can I expect from Grand Rounds?

Once you get started with Grand Rounds, a member of your Care Team will reach out to you to learn about your exact needs. They will then take care of all the logistics of your case, from finding the right doctor to collecting your medical records. After you have received guidance, your Care Team will follow up with you to answer any questions, make sure your needs have been met, and start any additional services if necessary.

What areas does Grand Rounds specialize in?

Grand Rounds can help with all medical conditions and specialty areas. Our top areas include: neck or back pain, knee-related issues, chronic headaches or migraines, cardiac issues, IDB or IBS or Crohn’s, fibromyalgia, sports injuries, cancer, pediatric care, pregnancy complications and much more.

How does Grand Rounds select high-quality physicians?

Grand Rounds physicians are selected on a number of different criteria, such as their institution, training, patient outcomes, and procedure volumes. In addition, we match you to a physician that specializes in your exact area of need based on your responses to a few quick questions.

What will my doctor think about Grand Rounds reviewing my case?

Most physicians are highly receptive to receiving another opinion on a complicated medical issue. You should not be concerned about offending your treating physician as their primary goal is to help you get better, and this opinion is simply an additional resource to do so. A good way to frame the conversation with your local treating physician is:

  • “I requested a consultation about [condition] and here’s what I learned…”
  • “Here’s what I was surprised to find out…”
  • “Dr. Smith recommended these options for my care because of these reasons…”

Will this information go to my employer?

In accordance with HIPAA, any personal health information you share with Grand Rounds is confidential and not shared with your employer. Grand Rounds will communicate the met requirement to your medical carrier (UMR) to ensure you avoid the $200 penalty, if applicable. Grand Rounds will not share any medical or case information, which is available only to you, your team members (who you can add personally), and your Grand Rounds Care Team.

Is Grand Rounds part of my insurance?

Grand Rounds is not affiliated with your insurance and operates separately to guide your ongoing care. The goal of Grand Rounds is to provide you with useful information about your health so that you receive proper treatment.

How does Grand Rounds use social security numbers (SSN)?

The last four digits of your SSN are needed to confirm both your identity when creating an account and your eligibility for the Grand Rounds benefit.
