Grand Rounds Blog

Hearing and sharing our patients’ amazing health care stories is a distinct honor. Their personal experiences perfectly illustrate the complexities of navigating the system and the many variables that impact outcomes—whether it’s geographic location or the specific medical condition they face. And while the journey is different for everyone, there’s one thread that remains consistent: Expert medical guidance makes all of the difference.

This week, we’re featuring Jaime, an eighth grade history teacher in Pittsburgh. Want to share your own story or experience with Grand Rounds? Send us an email at

Jaime’s Story

About a year ago, I had such severe pain in my lower abdomen that I went to the emergency room. The doctors there didn’t detect anything out of the ordinary and sent me on my way, explaining that the pain was most likely caused by gas.

For the next year, the pain continued. I saw my primary care physician fairly regularly to find some relief, but we weren’t seeing any improvement. I had also gained weight and was told repeatedly that it was just because I was getting older and my metabolism was slowing down. Needless to say, it was so frustrating. At the end of the school year, I couldn’t even pack up my classroom because the pain had gotten so bad.

About a year later, I received a faculty email from the school I work for letting us know we had access to Grand Rounds as a new health benefit. It explained that Grand Rounds would help me find a high-quality local physician or connect me with an expert for a remote second opinion. This was the perfect chance for me to try and get some new information — and I figured there wasn’t anything to lose by giving it a shot.

When I started a case and explained my symptoms to my care coordinator and Grand Rounds staff physician, they made sure to get me in for an appointment as early as possible in the morning and very quickly. My care coordinator even handled all of the appointment setting and connected me with Dr. George Eid, a nationally recognized surgeon with leading expertise in minimally invasive surgical techniques — and he changed everything for me.

Dr. Eid started off by scheduling some follow-up tests that I was able to have done the very same day. I absolutely loved that everything was this easy.

Through the test results, Dr. Eid discovered that I’d had three hernias, and that they’d gotten worse over the course of the year. Before going in I didn’t know where to turn, and suddenly I had answers and new options. He scheduled a surgery to repair the hernia and since then I’ve felt great. Dr. Eid and his staff were absolutely fantastic to work with.

I am so appreciative that Grand Rounds found this amazing doctor for me. I didn’t know who to turn to to find the right doctor all this time, and the entire process was fantastic. My care coordinator acted with urgency and my Grand Rounds staff physician was a great listener, which was huge for me. Too many times you go into a doctor’s office and they just focus on the symptoms. The rest of it — the frustrations or fears you have — go in one ear and out the other and you don’t feel like you’re being heard.

Dr. Eid’s office was great to work with and everything was so smooth. I know that my fellow teachers and I were nervous about new coverage locations under recent plan changes, but this was a perfect experience. And Grand Rounds is a great benefit that I hope others are able to take advantage of!
