Grand Rounds Blog

I’m excited to announce the official opening of our new Maine Patient Center in Lewiston, Maine! Lewiston will serve as our East Coast hub for patient care operations, and complement our West Coast operations center in Reno. Our new office is located in the historic Bates Mill Complex, the birthplace of Maine’s industrial revolution.

Based on past and future growth, we decided to expand to the East Coast to scale our customer service capabilities for our patients and expert physicians who are largely based in the Central and Eastern Time Zones. More specifically, two-thirds of patients using our remote second opinion service and 60% of expert physicians affiliated with Grand Rounds are located in this region. The Maine Patient Center will allow us to continue providing quality patient care efficiently to our nearly three million patients.

After a lengthy and competitive process, we chose Lewiston for its proven record of supporting new businesses. Even more, we have strong management team roots in this community and in Maine. Our medical director, Dr. Jacob “Gus” Crothers, grew up in Portland and I grew up in Lewiston—we’re both now based in the Maine Patient Center. We were also able to attract home Meryl Fogg, who grew up in Falmouth, and is our Director of Care Coordination and Maine Site Director. We’re all thrilled to return to our roots and be back in Maine!

Personally, I’m most proud of the team we’ve built in Maine and our accomplishments in such a short period. Today, we have 30 passionate and driven employees, primarily within the patient care team. These are the clinicians, care coordinators, and records specialists who work tirelessly to help our patients through every step of their health care journey. We look forward to growing to more than 150 employees over the next five years.

We’re honored by the warm reception from our new community and colleagues across the state, and the generous support from our coworkers in San Francisco and Reno throughout this process. At our new Maine attraction in the historic Bates Mill, we look forward to spurring a new revolution — in health care — where every patient feels like they have a doctor in the family to answer questions and ensure they receive the right care, by the right doctor, at the right time.
